Cataracts

Cataract is a partial or complete opacity of the lens and/or its capsule and will result in blindness when both eyes are affected in their entirety. Cataract can range from punctate, involving tiny spots, to diffuse, involving the lens completely and may affect one or both eyes. The cautious approach for breeders is to assume cataracts to be hereditary except in cases known to be associated with trauma, other causes of ocular inflammation, specific metabolic diseases, persistant pupillary membrane or persistent hyaloid. In 2003, 52 Entlebuchers had CERF exams of which 39 had normal eyes. Of the affected dogs, there were 2 cases with PRA, 7 with cataracts and 2 with persistant pupillary membranes. There continues to be no cases of diffuse cataracts reported. The data was obtained from the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. Updates will be provided on a yearly basis by the NEMDA Genetics Committee.
