Breeding Stock
The NEMDA Breeders’ Code of Ethics states: “Breeders bear great responsibility to the future of the breed and shall plan each breeding with the paramount intention of advancing and protecting the Breed”.
- For breeding purposes an Entlebucher Mountain Dogs (EMD) must be registered with a FCI recognized registry or NEMDA's parent breed club registry.
- Breeding stock must have hips rated as fair, good or excellent by OFA after 24 months of age. Dogs evaluated using PennHIP method after 18 months of age and having a distraction index (DI) of .45 or better may be exempted from the OFA requirement
- Breeding stock must have their eyes certified free from inherited eye disease annually by the Canine Eye Registration Foundation, (CERF). EMDs that develop unilateral posterior polar cataracts shall be allowed to breed to dogs free from congenital cataracts. It is suggested that, when possible, an EMD with posterior polar cataracts be bred with an older animal free of cataracts.
- Breeding stock must have the OptiGen prcd -PRA test performed prior to breeding. Stock may only be bred to animals that have also been tested and the breeding pair must meet the requirements listed below. This requirement also applies if breeding with non-BCOE breeding stock. Copies of the prcd -PRA test reports of any non BCOE stock used must be submitted with the annual report.
EMDs testing (Pattern A) Clear may be bred with any suitable EMD, (Pattern A) Clear, (Pattern B) Carrier, or (Pattern C) Affected.
EMDs testing as (Pattern B) Carrier) may only be bred to suitable (Pattern A) Clear.
EMDs testing as (Pattern C) Affected may only be bred to (Pattern A) Clear.
The prcd -PRA test results must be provided to the Breed Committee and any new BCOE applicants must provide test results at time of application.
- Annual CERF exams must still be obtained on breeding EMDs with posterior polar cataracts or PRA. Although CERF numbers will not be issued on dogs with cataracts or PRA, the CERF exam report MUST still be submitted to the Breed Committee. Approval to breed will be renewed annually by the Breed Committee upon submission of the annual CERF exam report.
- When breeding to a foreign (other than US or Canadian) owned EMD, COE breeders may accept the hip, eye and other health certification used by that country's breed club, but must require no less than the minimum standard described herein.
- Breeders shall refrain from breeding an individual who, although free from hereditary defects, consistently produces afflicted offspring.
- A Bitch will only be covered by ONE male during a heat cycle.
- Dogs and bitches shall not be bred until 24 months of age. A bitch shall not be bred more than twice in any consecutive 24 month period, always allowing a minimum of one heat cycle between breeding. A bitch shall not be bred beyond 8 years of age.
