Breeding Facilities

If at all possible, visit a prospective breeder. Visiting the prospective breeder gives you the opportunity to see the dogs and their environment. Both are very important in making that final choice. A good rapport with your breeder is very important because they will be there to help you in the future.Things to ask the breeder:

  • To see all the dogs that are there
  • To see pictures of stud dog (if not there) along with his pedigree
  • Health records of parents
  • Pedigrees
  • Where the pups stay after they arrive
  • Will they be inside or outside
  • Veterinary requirements
  • How are puppies matched to families
  • How the breeder assesses temperament
  • Names of other owners to contact
  • Contract information
  • Shipping information if pertinent

If there are puppies when you visit they should be active, playful and curious, have clear eyes, healthy coats and appear well nourished but not fat.

A puppy should not leave the mother before 7 weeks: ideally the adoption should take place between 7-8 weeks.

The period between 3-7 weeks is a crucial time in the puppy’s development and during this period the dogs learn to interact with the mother and littermates. The dog etiquette learned during this period prepares it to learn human rules and bond strongly with the new human family. Experiences between 7-12 weeks will determine his attitude to surroundings and relationships with people. Behavior problems may result when puppies are removed too soon or too late from their mother and littermates.

If visiting a breeder isn’t possible, and you have not yet met an Entlebucher in person and would like to, please contact breeding@NEMDA.org for the Regional Representative in your area for contacts of owners that are near your location.
