Breeder Committment

The NEMDA Breeders’ Code of Ethics (BCOE) is very strict and the members of the National Entlebucher Mountain Dog Association share a deep concern for the welfare and future of the Entlebucher. This code is established in accordance with the objectives set out in the Club Constitution as the minimum standards of practice for the responsible and ethical ownership and breeding of the Entlebucher. Violations of the NEMDA BCOE will be subject to NEMDA disciplinary procedures, and may be grounds for expulsion.

To become a BCOE breeder, a breeder must adhere to the NEMDA Code of Ethics (COE) and also to all requirements set forth in the BCOE. Breeders submit specific documentation that supports their adherence to the BCOE standards to the Breed Committee. This information is submitted as part of their initial application and then updated annually thereafter.

As a potential Entlebucher buyer you should resource a breeder carefully and one with whom you have a good rapport. This is very important as they will be your information source and helpline throughout your dog’s life.

  • Once you have selected the breeder, ask for references from previous families that have purchased puppies from you
  • If possible, make arrangements to visit with the breeder
  • Go over the Contract with them very carefully
  • Make a list of questions for the breeder
  • Discuss how to prepare your home for the new arrival
  • Arrange pickup times
  • Ask for pictures to be taken from birth onwards (if possible)

Breeders should be available to you via phone or e-mail for any questions you may have regarding the health and welfare of your new puppy. They should also contact you at least once a year to check on the health and progress of the dog.

Please remember that your breeder is your best source of information on your dog for its entire life and are very willing to share it with you.
