The Albert Heim award was initiated in 2003 to recognize and award NEMDA members who have made a significant contribution to the enhancement of the Entlebucher Sennenhund by supporting the programs of the National Entlebucher Mountain Dog Association.
This distinguished award is named for Professor Albert Heim (1849-1937), a Swiss geologist and devoted dog fancier. In 1913, at a dog show exhibit in Langenthal, Switzerland, Professor Heim judged four examples of a small herding dog with a congenital bobtail. On the basis of his judge's report, the breed was entered into the Swiss Canine Stud Book and thus became the fourth Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dog breed that we know today as the Entlebucher.
The first Albert Heim awards were nominated by the NEMDA Board and Committee Chairs and presented by President Jan Vincent at the 2003 Entlefest held in Calistoga, California. The tradition continues with nominations gathered the month prior to Entlefest with award winners announced at the Saturday evening Entlefest festivities!
