Maifest is always held the 2nd weekend of May each year in the beautiful Bavarian setting of Leavenworth, Washington, USA. The entire setting is wonderful and the people line the streets to watch the Grand March parade which starts the Maifest celebrations. There is a traditional Maypole complete with dancers in authentic costumes, Tyrolean dancing, Oompapa Bands and much more.
NEMDA has participated in this celebration for nine years and we join with the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Seattle to make it a truly Swiss Dog Day experience. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club is generally there to join in on the Parade and our fun activities that follow.
The inclusion of the Swiss dogs in the parade has become a highlight of the weekend. Bavarian costumes, decorated carts and of course dressing up our dogs and ourselves to ensure the theme is carried through. Suggestions such as garlands, scarves, saddlebags, harnesses done up in a Swiss motif would be a great addition. Great fun is had by everyone.
We also have a number of fun activities planned that may be enjoyed by all and many of them will take place at the Der Riteroff Motel - a central location. Everyone is welcome to attend. You do not have to have a Swiss Breed dog or even a dog at all - just come and have fun.
